Citizenship by descent
As granted in Chap 1:50 Section 5 of the Citizenship Act, persons born outside of the country are entitled to citizenship by descent, as long as either of their parents is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago by means other than that of descent themselves.
It is mandatory for all first machine readable passport (MRP) applicants to appear in person at the office to be interviewed and have their photograph taken.
If the applicant is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago by descent all of the applicable documents (see full list) must be submitted from the parent through whom they are obtaining citizenship and for the applicant themselves as well.
The full name of the parent through which the applicant is applying MUST be on applicant’s birth certificate in order for citizenship ‘by descent’ to be ascertained.
